What 16 years of teaching pilates has taught me
When I look back on the past 16 years, I'm filled with gratitude for the lessons, the people and the moments that have shaped my career. But before I stepped into a Virgin Active studio as an instructor, my love of movement began somewhere else entirely.
Where my journey began
I was born in Manila in the Philippines and had a great curiosity for movement at a Young age. Because of this, my parents enrolled me into a ballet class one summer, which allows me to explore other dance styles throughout my youth, such as contemporary, modern ballet, lyrical and jazz.
However, it was through dance when I experienced my first Pialtes class. It was quite an ‘aha’ moment for me. At the time, my dance teacher instructed us to complete a few exercises – Little did I know it was Pilates. It wasn’t just about stretching or pulsing, but focussed entirely on controlled movement and precisión. And since then, it’s been with me ever since.
My dance background served as a powerful foundation for understanding physical awareness and being mentally active in movement. It’s not just about moving, but having clear intention when you execute it.
The class I’ll never forget
My first Pilates class at Virgin Active was in 2010 when our beautiful Pitt St club opened. Nothing quite prepares you for teaching your first Pilates class – a whole group of people waiting for guidance and instructions. I had pur adrenaline and energy pumping through me - more tan a double espresso! But, by the end of the class, I felt a strong sense of elation in knowing that I had not only finished teaching my first Pilates lesson, but helped several members that day.
Over the years, I have taught thousands of Pilates classes, and it’s been incredible to see its effect on members complete wellbeing.
The transformation that matter most
One of the greatest rewards as a Pilates instructor is getting a front-row seat in watching our members transform. When some members attend class consistently, I notice the subtle changes that often signal to a greater shift in their wellbeing. It could be better posture, breathing with awareness, developing stronger balance or increased mobility. Even having a better attitude towards class! These changes have a huge impact on someone’s life. That’s the real value of Pilates – it’s not just about becoming physically stronger, but learning to trust your body, move with intention and appreciate what your body can do.
As a Pilates instructor, I love being able to build a happy and supportive atmosphere that encourages members to move with confidence and feel better with themselves. Sharing a space that’s fun, curious and safe for everyone to succeed, is what keeps me coming back to Pilates. And I hope to keep coming back for as long as I can.
The benefits go beyond the physical
The changes I see in members aren't just physical. As strength and confidence grow, people often seem calmer, more present and more connected to their bodies. Research supports this too, with studies showing that regular Pilates can help reduce stress, improve mood and increase body awareness.
That's because Pilates isn't just about the movements. By combining controlled exercises with mindful breathing, it encourages you to slow down, focus on the present and move with intention. As Joseph Pilates famously said, "Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness." Every class is an opportunity to strengthen your body, clear your mind and walk away feeling just that little bit better.
Looking back on the past 16 years, I’m overwhelmed with joy and gratitude, not just to my fellow instructors and colleagues, but to every member that walks through the door each day. Helping you become greater versions of yourselves is a true honour, and I’m lucky I get to share our joy of exercise every day. Here’s to many more years and many more ‘pulses’!
If you've been thinking about trying Pilates, consider this your sign. Come along to a class at Virgin Active and discover what all the fuss is about. I'd love to welcome you into the studio and help you experience the benefits for yourself. See you on the Reformer!
